Zhi Feng Reng

It was supposed to be a perfect vacation, but it ended in tragedy: The father of a Chinese family drowned after going for a swim a Phuket hotel pool Friday evening.

Mr Zhi Feng Reng, 36 years of age, his wife and his teenage son had just checked in into their rooms on the popular tourist destination in Phuket on Friday evening, July 1. Police declined to name the hotel but said it was located in Kamala subdistrict.

What had started as an idyllic holiday soon turned into a nightmare. “Mr Zhi went swimming at around 21:00 while his wife stayed in the room,” Pol Lt Co Somnuek Damgaeo from the investigation division of Kamala Provincial Police Station said.

At one point, Mr Zhi must have lost consciousness and drowned, police concluded. “His wife was not present at the time of the incident,” Pol Lt Co Somnuek said. When another family member arrived at the pool shortly later, he saw Mr Zhi with his head under the surface.

Family members and other hotel guests rushed to pull the man out of the water to render first aid. However, their help came too late; Mr Zhi died moments later.

Police physicians assume that the tourist had gone into a shock, lost consciousness and then drowned. An autopsy at Patong Hospital has been scheduled to very the exact cause of death.
